ART AFTER DARK AT THE MARY R. SCHIFF LIBRARY PRESENTS DIALOGUES WITH ARTISTS : ONE ON ONE

Engaging a work of visual art is an intimate experience. At each event in this new series, participants will have the opportunity to see up close a work of art by each of two participating artists, hear the artists speak about their work and get involved into the open discussion of the works and their context.

The title  work is based on field recordings that I collected near the town of Confluence, Pennsylvania in 2008. I was fascinated with the local soundscape; with its natural as well as man-made sounds. Fast flowing rivers and streams, bird songs, environmental sounds and an active train line being some prominent soundmarks.

This album contains three other compositions: Advesha, Amoha and

An Evening at the Museum.

I just saw this review of Lake Superior Gentle Waves on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give us more!, October 9, 2011

What a great recording. I've spent much time on the shores of Lake Superior, and I'm easily carried back to those days with this piece. The sounds of the smaller rocks rolling against each other, the changing tempo of the waves...i can picture quiet summer days with the sky and the lake blending together on the horizon, feel the cool breezes off the water, the hot sun heating the stones. Hopefully this recording will be one of many offered. The Lake, after all, has many moods.

I just completed a mix of The Grasses a video by Mark Patsfall.

You can find a fragment of the soundtrack here.

Acousmatic miniature, Pop, is part of the 60x60 Burgundy mix

On November 2nd, 2010 at 5:00 pm the video collaboration of the 60x60

(Burgundy mix) and Patrick Liddell will take place in Leipzig, Germany.

This performance is a special video collaboration created by Patrick

Liddell. Patrick Liddell is a composer and video artist living in Chicago. His

music/video is a postmodern blend of 'art' and 'popular' styles, with strong

hints of electronic, ethnic, video game, experimental, and film music. His

YouTube project "Video Room 1000" has received over one million views and

has been featured on a host of viral websites. Patrick recently completed

the video for Vox Novus's "360 degrees of 60x60", a six-hour video

installation featuring the works of 360 different composers; each hour of

the video revisits the same source material but manipulated to uniquely

accompany the music playing. He regularly performs live and improvised video

with many groups in the Chicago area, as well as his own video/music/art

under the moniker [ontologist]. Please discover more at: www.ontologist.us

Acousmatic miniature, Pop, has been chosen to be part of  360 degrees of 60x60 Burgundy Mix at the 2010 ICMC RED Edition (International Computer Music Conference) - New York - June 1-5

60x60 contains 60 works from 60 different composers. Each composition is 60
seconds (or less) in duration sequenced together to create a one hour
performance. Highlighting the work of a great many composers, 60x60
testifies to the vibrancy of contemporary composition by presenting the
diverse array of styles, aesthetics and techniques being used today.

Debuting in New York City November 2003, 60x60 started as an acousmatic
"tape" concert with its 60 short electronic works synchronized with an
analog clock to mark the passage of each minute. since then 60x60 has
received thousands of audio submissions from more than 50 countries around
the world, produced radio shows, collaborated with multimedia (including
dance, video, sculpture, and photography) and released several audio albums
on CD.

360 composers were selected from over 40 different countries.  Composers
ranged from different aesthetics, styles, ethnicity, culture, age, gender
and career stage.  60x60 is specifically designed to represent a broad
cross-section of acousmatic music being created throughout the world today.

In the spirit of worldwide collaboration and exposure in addition to
installation performance of the 360 degrees of 60x60 at the International
Computer Music Conference, ?remote? concerts of the 6 mixes will take place
in more than 100 venues throughout the world over the next year.  ?360
degrees of 60x60, 60 works, 60 seconds long; to and from all around the
world.?

Throughout the previous 22 years, over 6,500 works have been exhibited in this annual show, one of the longest continually running art exhibits in the Greater Cincinnati Area. All works will be reasonably priced.

The exhibition will showcase works by Art Academy students, faculty, staff and alumni and will include a variety of media including printmaking, oil painting, collage, acrylic painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography, fiber arts and digital art.

Current students will vie for various cash and cash-equivalent prizes, which will be announced at the ceremony. This year’s juror is Kip Eagan, Independent Curator.

Most works will be for sale and will be moderately priced. Over the years the Minumental has established a reputation for quality, affordable works of art. Come see for yourself.

Confluence - new work in sound and shape by Rich Bitting

The natural soundscape is rich with color and nuance beyond imagination. It is from this sonic metaworld that I draw inspiration for my projects. The human perception of sound has a relationship with the other senses. As I grew to appreciate this relationship between the senses, I began to realize that my musical scores—the physical scores themselves—could serve not only as performance directions, they could convey meaning as visual art in their own right. Visual art—painting, sculpture, etc.—has its own way of expressing rhythms and harmonies. I have created separate works in both visual and sonic media that are representations of these same, intangible ideas. As a species, we have evolved to rely primarily on our sense of sight. Our brains have evolved to edit our soundscapes, to filter out “perceived” background “noise” and to process only that sound we deem necessary as information. I invite you to close your eyes, open your mind, and listen to the world through fresh ears. -Rich Bitting 2009 opening reception 6-11 pm exhibition is extended through November 15th

Coyote Faucet has been included in the 2008 60 x 60 Midwest Mix. "Coyote Faucet" is an acousmatic sound work created using the unique soundmark of the water faucet in the third floor painting studio in the old Art Academy of Cincinnati building in Eden Park. The accompaniment uses gated audio samples of an art student painting and cleaning brushes. The 60x60 project has produced more than 20 different mixes highlighting the works of more than 1000 composers from around the world. Composers that have been included have ranged from every musical aesthetic, professional career stage, nationality, age, ethnicity, and gender. 60x60 uses a “guerrilla” style in producing and presenting itself. The project has been presented in as many different types of venues as it has in different countries around the world. 60x60 has been performed in concert halls, theater stages, night clubs, museums, art galleries, bars, store fronts, over the television, radio and Internet. The project has been mainly presented as an audio concert, but has also been presented as film, a live radio show, multimedia performance, multimedia media installation, a sound installation, and a dance performance.
