Mutations is a multi-textured, slowly-evolving organic soundscape influenced by my memories of the massive thrumming of periodic cicadas.

The soundscape of the late summer Pennsylvania woods of my youth has continued to hold a special place in my memory. My recollections are those of being overwhelmed by the massive thrumming of periodic cicadas gradually melding into the persistent insect ostinati of the night forest. As a child, I spent many nights being lulled to sleep by this insect lullaby.

Mutations is a multi-textured, slowly-evolving organic soundscape influenced by my memories of these aural phenomena. Mutations is so-named because each major section is composed from the sound material and sonic profiles from a preceding section. The “Prologue” and the following “Apostrophes,” composed from my field recordings, are brief references and pauses meant to bring focus to the main sections of the work. The overall structure of this work reminds me of the transformation and mutation in the life cycle of a cicada.
