redbud is composed from sound samples of field recordings of a redbud tree (Cercis canadensis). The original audio was recorded using both a contact microphone and stereo microphones. The three movements of redbud are loosely organized around the pitch series E D B D which I used as a basis to transform audio samples. The synthesized audio and the audio samples of the field recording along with the pitch-altered material provided the seeds for the work. Each movement was constructed freely following the logic of common musical forms.
I regard the dual nature of the redbud as a symbol of the natural world transcending the confines of human-altered space. This wild versus natural aspect of the redbud tree informed the compositional process - natural soundscape versus man-made soundscape coexisting, alternately switching perspective in their figure/ground choreography.
redbud is a contemplative audio work that benefits from deep listening.
